Power of Love Foundation’s (POL) Project Mosquito Nets program provides long lasting insecticide treated bed nets to women and children vulnerable to Malaria in Zambia. It is with your support that we were able to provide 1000 insecticide treated nets to women and children vulnerable to Malaria in and around Lusaka, Zambia in October 2011.
The Power of Love foundation offers low cost, high quality care to more children than one might imagine. We do this through a field tested, effecient program for assiting children infected with HIV and their families called Arms Reach Care.
Day 1: After a wonderful introduction and brief pow wow with the Power of Love staff here in Lusaka, I set out into the field for the daily home visits with the Community Care Assistants (CCAs). Today I accompanied Nelly to George Compound, a smaller neighborhood within the greater Matero area. Most of the families in George compound are living in just one, perhaps two room homes, very close to one another.
Lusaka might have a reputation as being just another large capital city, lacking in activities, routinely dusty, hot, and quite frankly, anything but a beauty. However, while I do agree, despite these characteristics, I whole heartedly believe that in terms of first impressions, Zambia wins the gold.
Let me explain a little bit about who I am and why I’m blogging on behalf of Power of Love! My name is Shannon Fontius, I’ve been an intern with the POL team since May. I mostly assist with donor relations and admin/programming from the San Diego headquarters.
For the next 6 weeks I have the pleasure of being in Lusaka, Zambia, learning the ins and outs of each program while also making connections with other nonprofits in the area, conducting program evaluation, all of course while having a little fun and adventure in Lusaka!
