October 2009

Dear Power of Love Friend:

Greetings!

Last week a few of us returned from Zambia after spending time with the POL programs there.

What an experience! No matter how often we go, every visit to Africa is life-changing. The courage and ability of the people of Africa to solve huge problems with limited resources never fails to amaze us. Take, for instance, our program in the Matero compound. The staff at the Matero Care Center, are our heroes. They work tirelessly to provide food, medicines, weekly health check-ups and psychosocial counseling to the 135 sick children (most are HIV positive) while reducing overall and per-child operating costs year on year. In addition, they advise and mentor the grandmothers who receive micro loans from POL and help them start and run small-businesses. This has allowed the grandmothers to put food on the table, medicines for the sick orphans in their care and send all children in the home back to school. Most grandmothers have returned their loans and many are planning on starting new businesses or expanding their current ones.

Overall, the program has not lost any children in over a year.

We can conquer the AIDS pandemic now. Never doubt that. We at POL are working hard to raise funds for our 2009/10 programs. Please donate generously at www.poweroflove.org, so that we can continue to save the lives of sick children in our care as well as the families impacted by the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Zambia, Kenya and India
