Dear Power of Love Friend:
Everyone A Caregiver
We are witnessing the Perfect Crisis in Africa - an out of control HIV/AIDS epidemic, crumbling public health systems and a rapidly declining number of health care personnel. If we are to win this war, it is important to leverage the few (though rapidly eroding) resources that Africa still has intact – the community and family structures and educated, willing community volunteers.
Power of Love’s Arm’s Reach Care community is an example of such a solution. It is Power of Love’s main project in the Matero compound of Lusaka and offers a model that can be replicated across southern Africa.
Arm’s Reach Care provides care for HIV infected children in the home. Using process principles borrowed from the business world, it leverages a network of family care givers, community health workers and nurses to provide all children high quality, low cost care at home.
Arm’s Reach Care consists of 3 levels of service providers who provide progressively more sophisticated patient care. Care providers at each level are trained to provide medical care within their capabilities and to quickly recognize situations that require referral to the next level of care provider.
The entire process is managed out of Power of Love’s Matero Care Center which, in addition to operating as the base to Arm’s Reach , also provides outpatient service to the most critical patients needing professional observation and intervention.

How You Can Help
Your support is critical to continue to provide the service to the pediatric patients through the Arm’s Reach Care program. Here are four ways you can help:
- Provide funds for food and medicines for the children infected with HIV/AIDS;
- Provide funds for training the FCG’s (Family Care Givers) and CCA’s (Community Care Assistants) who care for the sick children;
- Provide funds to salaries of our core medical staff (Clinical Officer and Nurse).
- Donate Frequent Flyer miles for our staff to travel to Lusaka and back.
Please consider extending your help to the Arm’s Reach Care program. As always, please share this message with like-minded others.
Project Mosquito Net
Another innovative project that POL is working on is prevention of Malaria in Mbita, Kenya. The Power of Love Foundation, Be The Cause (www.bethecause.org) and the Akado Medical Clinic (a project of Akado Women’s Group) are working together to educate the community on methods to prevent Malaria and are providing mosquito nets to families of children most vulnerable to the disease. This project has had a significant impact on reducing the impact of Malaria in Mbita and on the overall health of the community. Please help us raise money to purchase more mosquito nets for the children in the Mbita region. Each net costs $8.00 and every dollar of your donation for this campaign will be used to purchase and transport the nets. Additionally, your purchase of these nets will help support women widowed by AIDS.
