We are excited that a cure for HIV may be available in the next 2/3 years. Traditional approaches to the development of an HIV vaccine have not worked largely because the HIV virus mutates rapidly and cannot be detected by the immune system. Now, a new study shows that a targeted vaccine strategy can successfully activate early immune responses relevant to HIV - a key step toward a long-sought goal in vaccine development. Conducted by an international team of scientists at IAVI (International AIDS Vaccine Initiative) and Scripps Research, the trials have set out the essential groundwork for a future HIV vaccine with global potential.

There is more! Under a new partnership between Unitaid, the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), and the University of the Witwatersrand, the revolutionary HIV prevention tool, injectable lenacapavir, will be available at a cost of US$40 a year in 120 low- and middle-income countries starting in 2027. These developments give us confidence that new HIV infections and subsequently AIDS can be eliminated in the next 2/3 years.

Our take away is that a cure for HIV will be found, and we must stay the course.
